Image quality tiers

An attempt to find the sweet spot between quality and performance.

What each tier costs

At hero size

The same frame at every tier

Sizes and scores are medians over the catalogue stills listed in samples.json, fetched from images.cinobo.com with an Accept header that includes WebP. KB is 1,024 bytes.

Quality is the SSIMULACRA 2 score against the Magine original, after scaling the 2560 image down to 1920: 90 and above is visually lossless, 80 high, 70 good, 50 medium, below that low.

Crops are drawn in the browser from the files Bunny sent, each scaled to 1920 wide first, at the same position for every tier, so they add no compression of their own.
